As the first large sports complex on Hainan Island, the new Wuyuanhe Stadium is a construction project of a superior sports and cultural infrastructure for the region. With a seating capacity for more than 41,000 spectators, the stadium was built on a site of around 90,000 m² in a construction period of only 15 months. Given the importance of this new identity-building area, close constructive collaboration between the design and engineering teams was crucial. A key role in the architectural success was played by the integration of lighting into the overall design to enhance the architectural aesthetics and create a nighttime identity in the urban space, both functionally and design-wise.

The impressive scale of the sports facility was sensitively integrated into the context of the surrounding urban and coastal landscape. The lighting hierarchies of the vertical and horizontal levels structure the perception of the sculptural XXL object. The fluid design harmonises with the urban and natural environment, especially in the evening hours. The integration of lighting fixtures and the choice of monochromatic light, taking into account the impact on architecture, nature and the urban context, is a key component here.
