February 24th, with 3 weeks to go, the news that Signify had pulled out of Light + Building raised suspicions across the lighting industry.  Emails reading, “are you still going?” began to appear in inboxes.  Following the coronavirus outbreak in Europe the organisers of Light + Building decided to postpone the show until September.  In a statement on their website they said, “Due to the increased spread of the corona virus in Europe, Messe Frankfurt decided to postpone Light + Building after intensive consultations. The world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building services technology will take place in Frankfurt am Main from 27 September to 2 October 2020.  Existing visitor tickets for March 2020 will also be valid in September 2020.

Official Website Statement:

All ticket holders will receive new tickets with the current date of Light + Building 2020.  Visitors who wish to cancel their purchased tickets should send an e-mail to tickets@messefrankfurt.com – then the ticket price will be refunded. All other expenditures that have already been incurred (such as for accommodations, travel etc.) must be borne by the visitor.  Online ticketing for Light + Building has been deactivated until further notice. We will inform you as soon as the online ticketing will be available again.

The impact of the coronavirus  and the costs associated with flights and accommodation may be prohibitive for smaller firms to re-book.  It will be interesting to see how the postponement affects footfall in September, particularly for large parties of students that may have already left university or the institution cannot afford to re-book.  Organisations with fees associated to their event at Light + Building and planned product launches will see a financial impact to business.
