In the evenings, an innovative lighting concept makes the Bergisel ski jump and restaurant in Innsbruck shine in all imaginable colours against the panoramic backdrop of the Tyrolean Alps. To ensure the light spectacle will continue delighting sports fans for many years to come, Zumtobel has upgraded the luminaires – and more than halved the power consumption of the lighting in the process.

Its unique design makes the Bergisel ski jump one of Innsbruck’s most striking landmarks. Lighting also plays its part, following the shape of the ramp and setting the scene in the Bergisel SKY panoramic restaurant. So that the lighting remains up to date in terms of performance and sustainability, lighting specialist Zumtobel was commissioned by MK Illumination to replace the RGB fluorescent tubes that had been in use since 2002 with an advanced LED lighting system. The emergency lighting was also updated. Once again, Zumtobel is a step ahead of the regulations with this refurbishment project, as fluorescent tubes will no longer be permitted in commercial premises from August 2023.

Sustainability, advanced technology and aesthetics combined

During refurbishment of the lighting at Bergisel, it wasn’t unusual to see electricians installing luminaires while skiers made daring jumps behind them. Zumtobel replaced the existing RGB fluorescent tubes along the ski jump with a total of 79 controllable AMPHIBIA RGBW L LED moisture-proof luminaires in protection class IP66 with related switches and colour-changing function. Meanwhile, SLOTLIGHT infinity RGBW light lines from Zumtobel now stylishly illuminate the cube at the centre of the panoramic restaurant – without taking anything away from the Alpine panorama outside the window, of course. Zumtobel also found an elegant solution for integrating the emergency lighting: the control modules for the LED luminaires are fitted with a stand-by lighting function and connected to a central system. At the same time, the colour channel for white light fulfils the emergency lighting function.

At the operator’s request, the switches were designed to ensure that the lighting for the restaurant and the jump could be operated independently of each other. The lighting solution offers a huge amount of flexibility, enabling different colour combinations and effects to be achieved. In the evenings, the lighting along the ski jump usually goes through all the colours of the rainbow at ten-minute intervals. In addition, the LITECOM infinity controls allow any number of colour combinations to be programmed to represent different flags, providing an impressive backdrop for the respective national teams during competitions, for example. The colours yellow and blue are currently being used on the Bergisel ski jump to express solidarity with Ukraine.

Compared to the original system, the energy-efficient LED luminaires save over 50 per cent energy. The lighting solution not only fits in seamlessly with the architectural concept of the ski jump, but also satisfies the sustainability standards of the environmentally conscious region of Tyrol.
