“Passion for lighting, regardless of our differences, keeps us all connected and will be our strength moving forwards “, the Institution of Lighting Professionals’ new President has said in her President’s Address.

Fiona Horgan became the Institution’s 90th President and the second woman to ever hold the role at the ILP AGM held yesterday.

Quoting Martin Luther King Jnr, “Our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change”, Fiona added “I am set to take on this challenge to see the ILP at the other side for the members as we strive to achieve an all-inclusive professional community.  I ask the wider membership to be patient and allow time for our recovery but also continue to voice your support for the good work being done by our staff and volunteers”.

Aside from volunteering for the ILP, Fiona is Senior Design Engineer Manager at Doncaster Council in South Yorkshire.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “It’s a great honour for Fiona to be announced as the 90th President of the Institution of Lighting Professionals and only the second female recipient. It’s tremendous recognition from her peers.

Fiona has vast experience and expertise as a senior design engineer for Major Projects who works closely with our Street Lighting Team. She has played a key role in the rollout of our street light replacement programme across Doncaster which saw highly efficient and effective LED lighting designed and introduced. The new lighting uses the very latest technology to provide better lighting which dramatically reduces our energy usage, saves the council money, and importantly cuts carbon emissions. This forms part of our wider plans to tackle global warming and address the Climate Change Emergency as we go all out to become a carbon neutral council. Our objectives align perfectly with those of the ILP. Fiona will make a superb president and ambassador.”

Damian Allen, Chief Executive of Doncaster Council, said: “Fiona leads a team of street lighting engineers and other professionals designing in house schemes for the council and a varied and comprehensive list of external designs for developers to a tight timescale and budget. Fiona has shown herself to be diligent and collaborative which will be a big asset to the ILP in her role as President. We would all like to congratulate Fiona on her appointment and wish her every success in this new role.”

The AGM also saw confirmation of Rebecca Hatch IEng MILP as Senior Vice President and Perry Hazell as Junior Vice President.
