On a very cold and crisp morning last week over 400 delegates and 41 exhibitors, from across Europe, gathered together at the Congress Centre in Basel, Switzerland, for a day dedicated to debating, forming, and exploring Connected Lighting.

LED Forum, arranged and coordinated by Electro Suisse for the last 10 years, had a central thread running through it, what is on the ‘Industry’s Radar’? The trends were drilled down into further, forming four informative speaker tracks: Light Planning, Lighting Technology & IOT, Streets & Outdoor Lighting, and Electro Planning & Installation.

The Lighting Planning track, curated by ERCO and Lightsphere, brought experts from lighting design practices and software providers together to share ideas and to discover solutions for the complex and difficult relationships between digitisation of workflow, product choices, complete solutions and the need to still deliver quality work. Together the speakers tackled the question of where does the digital journey we are all one take Light Planning.

The speakers from the Streets & Outdoor Lighting program delivered case studies, research findings and asked questions around scalability, light pollution and sustainability, and the role of lighting in the smart city landscape of the future. Case studies from LEDON, Schreder Swiss AG and Elektrizitätswerke from the Canton of Zurich where very insightful, sharing implemented projects.

The event drew to a climax with a cross-industry leaders debate on the where lighting is headed in the future. No definite conclusion could be reached, but the panel of experts, including representatives from Zumtobel, Bosch, Trilux and Club of Rome, all stated that a future of light and lighting was destined to be digital, sustainable, and user focused.
