Name: April Dorrian

Job Title:  Studio Manager acdc, Simes, Thorn, Zumtobel

Where will you spend the holidays? Yorkshire for Christmas, Brighton for New Year.

What is your favourite Christmas food?  Pigs in Blankets.

What are you most excited about for 2020?  Summer.

What do you most want to see from lighting manufacturers in 2020?  Continued support for Women in Lighting

Have you already booked your summer vacation?  Yes. Bucket, Spade and cagoule all packed and ready.

Who is your industry inspiration?  Lighting smashers Martin Lupton, Sharon Stammers and Mark Ridler. They were and still are incredibly inclusive and supportive, in my case all those years ago, recognising me as an equal to any designers they worked with. Offering me opportunities where I was encouraged to be creative, to be happy and to make friends in lighting. The people they introduced me to have gone on to employ me and some have now become friends for life. I owe them a lot.

Which product has inspired you in 2019?  This is like trying to pick your favourite child. Can I take the fifth?

Which project are you most proud of? BDP Maggies Night Hike 2009 – A temporary light installation inside the Turbine Hall of  Battersea Power Station accompanied to a bit of Pigs on a Wing. A few of us on the team had had those very, very, close to us touched by Cancer and so not only doing the walk to raise money for such a good cause, but being part of a team lighting up one of the sites on the night to inspire the walkers was an incredible experience.

Can you name another reindeer besides Rudolph?  Comet.

Do you own a Christmas jumper?  Yes. With a Prosecco design and glorious amounts of sequins.

How is sustainability changing your job?  I’m now totally paperless. I don’t have a printer and have not printed a form, ticket or other piece of formal paperwork in over 3 years. Given humans cut down more than 4 billion trees every year just for paper, that makes me feel I’m part of a positive step in the right direction.

What is your most listened to track this year?  The Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant. It’s what gets me up in the morning, fires me through the day and leaves me cheered for the way home. Can’t beat the opening riff.

What was the last good film you watched?  The Irishman.

Have you already booked your flights to Trends in Lighting 22-24 September 2020?  No, not yet.

Where was the most interesting place your job took you this year?  The haunted vaults in Edinburgh. Light tight. Cold and creepy as heck.

Will Brexit happen?  Brexit will outlive us all

What is your favourite Christmas song?  Run Rudolph Run – Chuck Berry

How do you say Merry Christmas in another language?  Wishin’ yous a geet merry Christmas and a belta New Year. Behave ya sel and gan canny with the fizz. Aaal the best  – Geordie

Do you prefer LED Christmas lights or the traditional incandescent bulbs?  LED bulbs

Can you remember the job/course you were you doing 20 years ago? Working for U2.
